What It Is

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for information security management systems (ISMS). It sets out a systematic, risk-based approach to protecting information — covering people, processes and technology — rather than prescribing a fixed checklist. Certification is issued by an accredited third-party body after an independent audit.

Why Organizations Pursue It

It's the security standard most commonly named in enterprise RFPs and vendor security reviews. Certification shortens sales cycles, can reduce cyber insurance premiums, and gives leadership a defensible, internationally recognized baseline to point to after an incident or audit.
